| I was going to make an angry post about therightfangirl and how they come off as a bunch of deluded, whiny, privileged brats, but I decided that I just don't care enough.
Actually, that's a lie. I do care enough, and here is why: the members of that community give conservatives a bad name. Comparing Michelle Obama to Sasquatch is not clever. Blaming anyone but Palin on her decision to quit is not "defending your icon" it is disenfranchising a woman who made a (arguably poor and ill-advised) choice to step down from her political position. Insulting Obama's children and then turning around and bashing "the liberal media" for attacking Palin's family is hypocritical. Also showing a double-standard is attacking someone who reasonably and thoughtfully points out different interpretations of Bible-verses based on different translations of Aramaic and Hebrew, but insisting that Umbridge in Harry Potter is a liberal and anyone who disagrees with you is a fucking moron or a stupid liberal idiot. I can and will go on about their despicable behavior:
-Calling yourself a Christian but rejoicing that Dr. Tiller will "rot in hell" -Being pissy that his murderer was called a religious zealot, then turning around and condemning the entirety of the Islamic religion and culture as murderous, Western-hating infidels -Rejoicing that Proposition 8 passed and getting pissed off when people call you a bigot -Saying that your religion trumps people's rights to "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness" -Defending Sanford and saying that his infidelity should have remained a personal matter while insisting that Clinton should have been thrown out of office -Blaming the "liberal media" for harping on Adam Lambert's sexuality when Bill O'Rielly was the first to bring it up
I could go on, but since those bullet points are just from posts through the end of May, the entire list would take up too many journal entries.
I went to check out that community yesterday because of a secret on fandomsecrets that mentioned it. I was curious, I wanted to see what a "fan community for conservative fangirls" was like. I personally want my fandom space to be friendly, but also full of discussion and hopefully thought provoking as well. That is why I checked out the comm in the first place, I wanted to see how conservative fangirls acted in their own safe space. What I found was a cesspool of hate and misinformation* with one in every 40 entries being remotely fandom-related. Anyone who spoke from a fiscally (not socially) conservative perspective or even someone willing to listen to the other side was either immediately shot down or accused of being a troll. It was bullshit. I wish I had never clicked on the link. It is an angry community full of hatred, bigotry and bile.
I almost didn't write this post because I was worried about the reactions from conservatives on my friends list. The several that I know are conservative are reasonable, well-spoken, and intelligent people, and I respect their opinions while disagreeing with them. I think that is what made me so angry about that community- I'm used to civil discourse with people that hold different opinions from me, and I'm also used to seeing them write about their opinions in well-researched posts. There was none of that reason in the community, and it scares and angers me that people can be so convinced that they are right without putting any effort into researching what they believe in.
I am well aware that some of you may choose to de-friend me over this post. I'd rather you talked to me in the comments or by PM, but I won't be angry if you choose not to.
*One post accused liberals of "ratting out" Sanford, blamed everyone from the liberal media to the South Carolina Democrats, and had about 30 comments agreeing with everything in the post. When one commenter pointed out that the people who had brought Sanford's affair to light were the Republican Lt. Governor and the Republican State's Attorney General, both political rivals, and gave a brief history of Sanford's battle with his own party the OP responded with "Oh, wow, this would have been good to know before I posted, LOL!". It is called research, you ignorant bitch, try it out sometime! | comments: 29 comments/Leave a comment |
| The Great Swimsuit Hunt of 2009 is (hopefully) over! After buying one godawful flamingo pink (thought it was fuschia) suit from Lands' End, returning that, then on a lark buying a two piece that's not too terrible from Sam's Club (but barely holds the girls in/makes me terrified for a flashy moment... and makes me feel like a frumpy old mom), I then found myself hunting for a more structured swim top from Lands' End.
As I found one I liked, I looked at the price tag and realized that I was spending a mere $10 less, all told, for the darned top than I'd pay for a the one piece swimsuit I've been lusting after for a couple of years now. So, I just took the plunge, said, "to hell with it!" and bought the one piece. ( And the winner is... )
Cross your fingers for me that it fits and looks cute. I have no worries, though. I only wish I had it tonight, for our swim hangouts with Tim's family in Columbia. Oh well, I'll wear the not-so-cute mommy tankini and pray my bazooms stay in.

| I must proudly trumpet that, as of today, I am fitting into size 16 pants! Albeit a very TIGHT fit, I'm sporting them with pride... (and a bit of tummy jiggle).

That means that I am down 10 sizes from my post pregnancy size! (or 5 sizes if you count it by 2 numbers at a go... which is still good stuff!)
(Ahem... 6 sizes down from a month and a half ago... when I started actually making an effort/eating well and exercising. And double Ahem, skinnier than I was when I took my job, nearly two years ago.)
And I'm still ways away from my goal. But I'm gonna get there. I'm not stopping until I am one toned, curvy and bangin' gal. This milestone is giving me the push I need to step up my Wii Active game, continue going to yoga and keeping up with the good eating.
YAY!!!

| Watching a digital odometer roll over to 050000 isn't quite the thrill one would have hoped it to be.
Kind of makes me miss the old Plymouth Horizon. | comments: 2 comments/Leave a comment |
| I feel like they haven't even MADE the swimsuit with enough shaping, slimming or toning effect to smooth over my bizarre, post baby jelly belly weirdness body.
And I'll be damned if I'm wearing some fat old lady suit.
I wish old fashioned swim suits from the 1900s were back in style, so EVERYONE looked like they were wearing a giant burlap sack ;0) | comments: 5 comments/Leave a comment |

| Pepe is halfway done. That there to the right is a mummy eggcup for scale. Oddly enough, the most disturbing thing to me is the show-through of the stuffing. This must be addressed, either with colored filling, or more likely a sacrificed stocking. At this point, stuffed, knitting on the metro is adorable and creepy, but also causes the stitches to stretch as I knit. Before I stuffed, I spritzed with water to slightly block my rather wack & uneven Magic Loop stitches.Pepe! The Mail Order Money Musical
confidential to poptart: quilt batting fail. I had a feeling it might - that stuff is matted down to an even thickness and somewhat oriented. I've been pulling it apart to fluff, but it's then lumpy & inconsistent. Thanks very much for the last minute search & rescue though - will come in handy for other projects like adding quick-drying relief thickness to a felted baby onesie decoration, unless you want it back! | comments: 5 comments/Leave a comment |
| I swear, I still exist. See, this post proves it. :)

Finding the balance between being a mother and being an individual being has been a trying task. I'm sure that I will spend the rest of my life trying to figure out how to be the most devoted, loving parent possible AND still retain the part of me that is Brooke. In the time since Story was born, I have had to evaluate my entire life, not only in its day-to-day processes but my passions and interests as well. Everything is a gamble with time. How do I juggle being a mother, a good wife, a career professional and a fit/sane person?
I'm not sure I've figured that out yet. But I feel like I'm finally getting somewhere. ( Read more... )
And so, check this space... Part of this getting-back-to-Brooke thing entails actively blogging again, so I'll be trying to not let this space get so cob-webbed.

| This poor, poor journal has been ignored for too long. I apologize for leaving for the delightful, instant-gratification, short attention span world of Facebook. Now, I'm not promising anything here. I still think that Facebook is doing me a good turn for light, day-to-day updates and communications. But I think I will be coming back to LJ a bit more often, as I have things to ramble about once in a while.
This Sunday is the next...

| | I checked on Noelle's website to see if she had any 100 psi 43" hoops for sale and saw that she was starting a new Monday night series tonight at 2640. What with the water ballet pending, I couldn't commit to the whole six weeks, but I definitely plan to go tonight. | comments: Leave a comment |
| I'm feeling a little pickled after yesterday's awesome BBQ at the stately Train Mansion. It was just what I needed, relaxed hanging out, a little swimming, some tasty food, and a hell of a lotta hoopin'. Props to wasabi_poptart for being smart and bringing her hoops and generously sharing them with us. I think the drinks and the hours of physical activity are why I'm feeling a little slow this morning.
Oh, ding0 spotted the grilled cheese cart on the Avenue last night and we had a late night GC and french fry snack. We actually found the GC guy's house on a walk one day. The best part? ding0 was barefoot because his boots were packed in the truck with the party stuff. | comments: 1 comment/Leave a comment |

| Got up, puttered around the house, ate, took a shower, etc. while waiting for a call from the garage that the loaner car was ready. Gave up around 1, called them, found out it would be late in the afternoon. High tailed it out of the house to catch the 1:36 light rail train north. It never came, and neither did the 1:51 nor the one after that. Almost 40 minutes after I left home, catch the train. Get off in Timonium, hike over to my bank, pop in Rite Aid, hit Superfresh for BBQ items, walk back to where I think there is a post office (no), pop in Lohman's to look for a bathing suit cover up (no), grab the train south.
Get off at Woodberry, walk up to the garage on 41st across from the shopping center. Pour sweat the 15 minutes it takes to get the loaner car. At least the loaner car is free. It's also a small blue Toyota that's at least 15 years old and maybe even 20. Nothing fancy but it handles really well and I like it. Stop at the post office, send out rent and a pile of magazines (the guy PO worker gives me a slightly beat up padded mailer for free!). Head home.
Home at 5, eat a sandwich really fast, throw stuff in a bag, head to Druid Park's pool for practice until 7pm. Swim. Swim swim swim. Home to clean cat litter, shower, and make dinner.
My feet hurt and I think I have a shin splint. I'm going to go have some ice cream and go to bed. Pedestrians of Baltimore, I salute you! | comments: 2 comments/Leave a comment |
| I've attempted to go vegetarian twice before. Both times I was living in Florida.
The first time was after Thanksgiving 1996, which was cooked, shall we say, under the influence, and I got it into my head that the turkey was actually sliced off roadkill and no way was I putting that in my mouth. It reminds one of something Ted Nugent once said about Paul McCartney: "Yeah, if I'd done as much acid as he had, I wouldn't want to eat anything with a face, either." This resolve lasted approximately 36 hours, until somebody came into the bookstore carrying a bag of Chicken McNuggets and it was more than I could bear.
The second time, I'd spent a few weeks in England with my sister over winter break in 1998, where I'd purchased 20 p's worth of black pudding and never could bring myself to prepare it. When I got back home, I started writing my thesis, about cannibalism and blood libel, and the idea of ingesting somebody else's blood pretty much turned my stomach. I got on this whole Shelley kick, about how meat was the "diet of tyrants," and decided that killing and eating another creature for the nutrients they had collected for their own survival was cheating, and that if vampires were parasites then meat-eaters weren't much better. Unfortunately, my self-righteousness crashed and burned one morning as I could no longer bear the cravings for steak and ended up tearing into a package of raw stew beef right there in the Publix parking lot.
I've wrestled with it from time to time over the past eleven years. I still think it's cheating. But, it's a food chain, right? Is the cow cheating when it eats the grass? That used to be alive, too, right?
So I'm trying it again. Not saying it's forever. Just until I pass the meat counter at the grocery store and can't stand it anymore. | comments: 11 comments/Leave a comment |
